Tips for Maintaining Your Water Fountain
Water Fountain Care And Maintenance:
Tips To Help Keep Your Waterfall Clean And Running Smoothly
Indoor
Fountain Care Indoor
wall water fountains, as well as floor fountains, are practically
maintenance free because they are well protected and cautiously designed
to recirculate water with their own built in reservoirs. Many of these
indoor fountains operate with a state of the art overflow system that
eliminates valve clogs and other related issues. Most units also feature
anti-microbial coating on the interior surfaces to help prevent mold.
Caring for your indoor wall fountains or indoor decorative pools will
involve using distilled water (not drinking water) and avoiding tap
water which can add undesirable minerals.
Outdoor Waterfall Care
However, caring for your outdoor
water fountain or waterfall and pond can be quite a challenge because
many foreign materials can fall into the pond and fountain as the result
of strong winds, weather, animals and other bacterial threats. For pools
and ponds, filters and skimmers are recommended so that residue and
small debris can be filtered out of the pool. If you keep aquatic plants
then you will have to periodically remove dead or dying leaves and also
insert fertilizer tablets for increased plant productivity. Experienced
pond keepers say that draining the water and adding fresh water is not
necessary, provided you keep the pond clean and do not add too many
fish. You may only have to add fresh water to keep the water level strong.
Other pond maintenance involves dispensing with aphids and algae.
Winterizing Your Pond and Waterfall
When it comes to winterizing your pond, aside from protecting the fish
and aquatic life, there's little you have to do. If it's only a mild
freeze then you can place plants at the deepest part of the pond, about
three feet or more, since only the top level of water will be frozen.
If you are concerned about your fish take them in when the temperature
drops below 40 degrees, as most fish can survive 45 degrees Fahrenheit
and up. Remember to winterize your electrical or external pump. Usually
a pump will come with winterizing equipment, though many owners choose
to buy pond heaters and air bubblers rather than close the pond for
an entire season.
A little prep work and research up front can make keeping your fountains
and waterfalls, indoors or out, a much easier task.
