Using Fountains and Waterfalls in Your Garden Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese discipline that measures the harmony within one's environment. The practice takes into account many aspects of astrological, philosophical and even psychological aspects. The five elements to Feng Shui are fire, water, earth, metal and wood. These elements must be working together if there is to be complete harmony. It is believed that the elements must feed each other or a cycle of destruction – hence bad luck -- may develop.

While positive Chi energy can be achieved using indoor waterfalls, Feng Shui philosophy says that outdoor waterfalls are even more important to balance. If you have a garden, then you must maintain the positive flow of Chi so that the energy can move freely. Barriers must be removed so that the flow can happen. On the other hand, if Chi moves too quickly through a garden this could cause a volatile atmosphere. Water is used to either slow down or speed up the flow of chi, and can be present in the form of a pond, water fountain and waterfall.

When positioning your water feature, ensure that it is located towards the north, east or south east corner of the garden, as this is good luck. The water should flow towards your home, facing the main entrance or a large window – this brings Chi energy inside your home towards other elemental sources. External water sources that are not directly connected inside your home could block the force of energy.

Waterfalls cannot be too strong or too gentle, in order to keep Chi energy moving. A water feature must be properly sized, not so small that it suggests a lack of abundance, but also not too powerful for the size of your home. (If necessary you can opt for a custom sized waterfall for your yard.) You must take care of your pond and garden, removing dead plants and debris, as well as algae and bacterial slime. Check your feature for cracks and leaks, as all of these negative things could cause much Chi energy to escape. Finally, add some goldfish to your pond or pool since in Feng Shui philosophy, they represent wealth!
